Required items
For this example, there will be just the single photo gallery below rather than sections since it so short. The first item we are going to place is the 16 mHz crystal. The crystal isn't polarity sensitive so the orientation doesn't matter. One leg goes to pin 9 and the other leg goes to pin 10. The two capacitors will connect the crystal to ground. Connect the first capacitor between pins 10 and ground and the second between pin 9 and ground.
All AtMega328 chips from Quail Shop come pre-loaded with the Arduino bootloader. If you purchase a chip from elsewhere and need to load the bootloader, follow the wiring diagram. Connect the chip to an uno board that already has the bootloader on it. In the Arduino IDE, open the ArduinoISP example file and upload to your uno board. Make sure you have the correct COM port and board selected in the IDE before uploading the ISP sketch. Following the wiring diagram, hook up the AtMega328 chip to the Uno board. Once the chip is wired, change the programmer (under tools in the IDE) to Arduino as ISP. Do NOT select ArduinoISP. Finally, burn the bootloader ( under tools, it's the last option in the list.
To upload a sketch the AtMega328 chip, either place it in an arduino or follow the wiring diagram above. If you are wiring the chip to an Uno board, make sure the board itself doesn't have a chip in it already.
